This past weekend, I had the opportunity to run in my first marathon race. I didn’t run a full marathon or even a half marathon but I did run about half of a half of a marathon. I ran 6.2 miles otherwise known as a 10K. It’s still pretty long to me.
The race was originally encouraged by my day job at Fellowship Technologies. There were several of my co-workers in the race and I ran with a couple of them.
I had a blast!
I’ve been training all summer in the oppressive heat and quite honestly had not completed 6.2 miles in any practice run. I was a bit nervous that I would not finish well or at all for that matter. I was completely wrong about that! I actually finished and finished well.
I ran at my co-workers pace and because she had been in races before she knew what she was doing. Her pace was steady and very tolerable. I personally would have raced much faster had I gone at it alone. In fact, at the pace I’ve been training in I would have finished 2nd or 3rd in my age group. Instead I finished 6th…not too shabby!
I think I’ll run another one in the near future but I think I’ll run a half of a marathon – 13.1 miles. I might even someday grow up and run a full marathon at 26.2 miles. Then I can put one of those little stickers on my car that simply says 26.2.
Thanks to my friend and co-workers Mark and Chris for inspiring me to start running and for calling me a runner. Not a “Jogger” not a “Rogger” (runner+ jogger) but a “Runner”.
Run on brother!
