So I’ve hear excuses daily why people cant’ or won’t serve at the church they attend. Some are legit and others are less than legit. It generally comes down to either lack of confidence, lack of trust or selfishness.
Lack of confidence = I’m not worthy or adequate enough based on my lack of skill or knowledge of the subject or I’ve got too much sin in my past to be worthy of the task.
Lack of Trust = I don’t believe that serving is going to benefit me or my family enough to make the commitment to do so. I’m not sure if God even notices or cares.
Selfishness = I don’t want to commit because it might cut into my already busy schedule or it might mean that I have to give something up that I value more than serving.
I know there are probably a number of other reasons and heck there might actually be physical or mental disabilities that can prevent someone from serving but even then there is usually something those folks can do. So in my humble but accurate opinion, I believe there is really no excuse for not serving in the church
So to counter that – here are three reasons why everyone should serve in the church they attend.
#1) We are called & wired to do so. (Col 3:23-4, Eph 6:7, Rom 8:28,Rom 12:1, Rom 12:6-8, John 13:34)
God intended each of us to follow our Faith by grace with works that would strengthen our walk and draw us closer to Him. Serving in the church is just one of the ways he wants us to do that. He even gives us spiritual, mental and physical gifts so that we can accomplish this. We really can do the “love one another” thing because He put it in our hearts to begin with.
Hear the phone ringing? It’s God – He’s got some really amazing things for you to do.
#2) It will make you a better person – do I really need scripture here? If so just look at #1.
Just start serving the church and other people and the results will speak for themselves. Serving others is incredibly satisfying and rewarding. Because we are naturally wired to serve God we automatically respond to it. In turn, you will see yourself treating everything around you better. It’s like exercising your spiritual muscles and growing in strength.
Go on now – give it a try! Serving comes with a 100% money back guarantee!
#3) It comes with rewards – (Eccl 3:13)
I could go into all kinds of spiritual reasons how serving comes with rewards but I’ll focus on a more humanly reward – Food! I personally like to eat. It’s probably one of my top 5 things to do. I have found if you serve in the church you often get to put on the feedbag and enjoy some good home cooking. Call it a perk or a blessing but brother you better believe it’s God’s will.
This Thanksgiving we are honoring our children’s ministry volunteers with a dinner that will feature Babe’s Chicken. I’m 100% sure that Babes Chicken is God’s will. Bring it!
As usual this blog is really more about me ranting than it is anything. I just believe the church is the hope of the world and it can’t be done without the hearts, minds and muscle of the people that make up the church. Serving God is the coolest!
I loves me some volunteers!
Blessings to all,
Pastor Brian
