For those of us who serve on a church staff, you will relate with this tag line. Can I get amen? It seems like every week I personally meet people who tell me all kinds of things about churches they have visited, attended and even became members of. Things like: “the people there are not friendly”, “the music is too loud”, “they don’t have a cross or a steeple”, or the classic line “I can’t believe the pastor wore flip flops on stage!” Blah, Blah, Blah!
Church is what you make it! It is not (repeat) NOT your mama! It’s not there to make sure you feel good or comfortable or entertain you. It’s there to honor and glorify God only and it’s all for His pleasure. The church is the Body of Christ (Ephesians 1:23; 4:12) and I love how Paul describes the church as the bride of Christ in Ephesians 5:22-23. Seriously gives me chills!
What do I mean by church is what you make it? I’m so glad you asked! It starts with your attitude. Take the famous Kennedy statement and change it to say “ask not what you church can do for you but what you can do for your church.” This is so true! You want to enjoy church? Then plug into serving, giving, attending, joining a small group, going to Bible Studies, mission trips, praying for your church leadership. This may seem like a simple formula but I bet if you try all or some of these I can guarantee you will get more out of church than you can even imagine. Be the body, be the bride and see more of God’s glory revealed in your life. Don’t forget your flip-flops!
