This week is our church’s annual VBS and as the Children’s Pastor of my church I’m neck deep in the middle of it. My lovely wife and ministry partner has been working for countless hours trying to organize, plan, create and assemble everything from people to snacks to registration to well…everything! She is the greatest blessing an ol’goofy west Texas boy like me could ever have. This event has traditionally attracted 250+ kids every year and this year is no different.
This year we are doing an Aeronautical/flying theme and I decided to dress as Maverick from Top Gun. Though I’m no Tom Cruise (Thank God!), I am dressed like him or the other character Goose depending on who you talk to. I’m wearing a flight suit and of course its 100+ degrees in Texas right now so this outfit is not really preferred for the temperature at hand. In other words…IT”S HOT!!!!!
As I prepared for this event I got to thinking that I need to be more like Maverick in Top Gun. Maybe not all of the character traits of Maverick but more like him. Especially with my Faith! I need to stand confident, proud and be willing to take risks when it comes to sharing the Gospel with others. I need to get rid of the past things that hold me up and become “all that I can be” as I progress in my walk.
The ultimate Maverick was Jesus! He blazed trails, he balked at “the establishment” and he was extremely confident yet humble in his approach. The result of his efforts changed the world and is still changing lives all over the planet. Jesus created the model for all of us to live and to love and made a way of grace that allows each of us to feel freedom in being a Maverick for God. The result is that he will bless us for being His “trail blazers” here on this earth.
I don’t know about you but I want to be a Maverick for Jesus! Tonight I will encourage the kids to be one and with God’s help we’ll empower a whole slew of them to become “Top Guns” for Jesus.
